I was searching for love quotes. Actually, I was searching for 1 Corinthians 13, where it talks about what love is. Love is kind, love is patient, love endures; that long quote that has always been an ideal, some nice dreamy picture of love, but nothing that seemed concrete. I ran across quotes on love from brilliant people, from stupid people, from ordinary people, from famous people, all walks of life have had something to say about love.
Love is not, nor has it ever been, who will buy me the biggest shiniest ring, or the most expensive house or the car loaded with all the extras. Love has always been, for me, in my idealized world of grown-up fairy tales, the person who sees you for who you are, and loves you anyways. For the first time, the very first time, I have someone who does not demand that I change, tell me to spit my gum out because I pop it, or that I’m too old to be sleeping with a stuffed bear, or pinches the pinchable parts of me, and comments on my love of chocolate.
He’s seen through the temper tantrums, through the tears, the drama, the issues, with a quietness I don’t remember seeing in a man before. A simple request to let him carry the weight of my life has led to him seeing who I am, who I truly am when everything is stripped away. To my everlasting shock, he didn’t walk away, didn’t tell me I needed to change, or anything else, he simply accepted me as I am.
Love is a man in ACUs, on his knees in front of you, promising forever. And he didn’t have to say the words, didn’t actually have to say anything, to have me in tears.
